If you run a business, always direct your followers to your website first and not to your Instagram or Twitter page. If you don't have a business to promote, you are still somewhat in a public eye: your employer, future or current, your potential date, private school you're trying to get your kids into - people google search your name more than you think, whether you want it or not. So why not have a personal website - a nice organized place with all your achievements you'd like to share and the content you have control over.
